Climate news

Supermiljöbloggen

SMB started in 2010 as a response to the media’s lack of environmental coverage during the election. Since then, they have grown to become one of Sweden’s largest platforms for environmental news. Over the years, they have covered countless Swedish and international environmental issues, driven the environmental debate forward, and influenced both decision-makers and companies.

Goal

My mission was to modernize and renew SMB’s graphic expression. This included creating a new logo, choosing new colors and fonts, and developing a new, modern website (which is now a bit dated).

Bumps on the road… Story

There are always many problems to solve during a project’s course. However, in this case, there weren’t many bumps on the road; SMB had great confidence in the decisions I made. We discussed color choices and all those things, but no major issues needed resolving. So, I thought I’d share how we got in touch instead.

I had been a loyal SMB reader for a while and noticed that they were seeking support in the form of donations to revamp their then 7-year-old website. Eager to contribute and ease my climate anxiety, I reached out and offered my services for free so they could use the funds they had raised for other purposes. Since then, I have continuously worked on new features and improvements for the site.

We hope to launch a completely updated version soon… Stay tuned.

Solution

Since they already used WordPress for their old website, I built the new site with WordPress as well. This was the easiest option for everyone involved—the editorial staff and writers were familiar with the interface, and it made transferring all the old articles much easier.

I started by creating a design system with colors, fonts, and components. Then, I designed the site in Adobe XD, which was before Figma existed.

I’ve always liked to experiment. I had an idea that the logo should be animated and represent different states or environments on Earth.

As for the website. As usual, I built everything completely custom and created ready-made components that the admin can arrange in any order. This way, the correct design is maintained regardless of the component order. Like Klimatgranskaren, the focus is on ensuring the visitor can easily access the text.
